The Transport Compliance Branch consists of the Highway Transport Patrol, Transport Investigation Office and Head Office. The following summary will explain the function of each Unit:

Transport Compliance Branch Toll-free Inquiry Line
Call 1-866-933-5290 if you are commercial carrier seeking regulation information and technical advice from Transport Compliance Branch staff before going on the road. The inquiry line operates weekdays, except statuary holidays, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Highway Transport Patrol (HTP)
The Highway Transport Patrol provides on-road enforcement officers working out of 14 detachments. The HTP operates inspection and weigh stations at six border and seven interior locations, three 24 hour self-weigh decks and one Mobile Vehicle Inspection Station.

Transport Investigation Unit (TIU)
The Transport Investigation Unit investigates violations within the road transportation industry (trucks and buses). TIU also performs hours of service audits, weight audits and manages the Shipper Liability Program. In addition, the office maintains an inquiry phone line and provides educational presentations to carriers and drivers.

Head Office
Head Office is responsible for providing strategic direction and guidance to the branch, promoting harmonization of commercial vehicle safety standards nationally and internationally and CVSA program management. The office develops and implement's operational policies and procedures specific to commercial vehicle enforcement. It coordinates branch administrative functions, officer training programs, correspondence, issues management, as well as financial and human resources planning.

The office represents the department in provincial, inter-provincial, national and international conferences and task forces regarding commercial vehicle safety, including the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) and the Canadian Council Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA).

Under new regulations, all commercial vehicles (trucks/power units registered over 5,000Kg RGVW), and any trailers or semi-trailers that they are towing, must be inspected by the driver or a qualified person every 24 hours (when being operated).

The Highway Transport Patrol is a specialized team of uniformed Highway Traffic Officers who are responsible, through transport law enforcement for the protection of the road infrastructure, for ensuring that goods move safely across Saskatchewan's highway network and for maintaining a competitive regulatory environment for all carriers.

The Highway Transport Patrol Officers operate police vehicles which contain special equipment to weigh and inspect vehicles.

Driver's of commercial vehicles are limited in the number of hours they can drive. Saskatchewan has provincial hours of service regulations.

Saskatchewan is a member of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), as are the other provinces and territories in Canada, the United States, Mexico and Puerto Rico.
