Throne Speech 2008
Did you know?

The 2008-09 budget ensures the safety and security of motorists by committing $5 million to help rural municipalities improve municipal roads affected by truck haul traffic in heavy oil production.

The Ministry will mow highway rights-of-way and other public improvement sites under its jurisdiction as required to:

  • give a reasonably neat appearance that is appropriate to the importance of that specific section of highway;
  • control noxious weeds;
  • optimize snow removal and snow control expenditures; and
  • maintain acceptable sight distance on curves and at intersections.

In formulating our mowing policy, the Ministry considers several factors, including farmers traditionally harvesting hay from highway rights of way. The safety issue of keeping sight lines clear to reduce the risk of collisions with wildlife is also taken into consideration. Each year, the Ministry conducts a review of mowing practices. These concerns are balanced with the Ministry's budgetary constraints in developing our mowing policy.
