Typical load limits on highways (not banned or restricted)

New regulations came into effective December 1st, 1999 which allow increased steering axle weights on some trucks and changes in gross vehicle weights to other configurations.

The following is a general guide for weight limits on Saskatchewan Highways. Maximum gross vehicle weight is dependent on highway classification, maximum registered gross vehicle weight for vehicles, tire size, axle spacing, etc. This chart is based on 280 mm (11") tires and is intended as a guide only. Refer to Chapter H-3.01 REG 2, The Highways and Transportation Act, 1997 Section 69 for complete information.

Maximum gross vehicle weight is based on tire loading. Tire loading is 10 kg per millimetre (560 pounds per inch) width of tire, as stamped by the manufacturer, to a maximum of 3000 kg (6600 pounds) on any tire. This is subject to any lower axle weights in the regulations, such as the steering axle gross weight of 5,500 or 7,250 kg. At no time may the gross vehicle weight exceed the licensed gross vehicle weight for that vehicle.

These are typical examples only. In the event of a discrepancy between this list and the Regulations, the Regulations shall apply.

Effective December 1st, 1999, The weight of steering axles on STRAIGHT TRUCKS, 2 and 3 axle trucks (NOT HIGHWAY TRACTORS OR POWER UNITS) is changed from 5 550 kg to a maximum of 7 250 kg on the PRIMARY HIGHWAY SYSTEM ONLY. The maximum steering axle weight on these 2 and 3 axle straight trucks remains at 5,500 kg on secondary highways and municipal highways during spring road restrictions as well as during the winter weight season. The following conditions must be met in order to carry 7 250 kg on the steering axle.

The steering axle of the straight truck must be equipped with tires that are the proper size (as stamped in mm. on the side of the sidewall of the tire) x 10 kg per mm width of tire to the maximum weight of 7 250 kg for the steering axle of a straight truck operated on Primary Highways

For straight trucks equipped with a tandem steering axle, the maximum gross weight for a steering axle is 6 800 kg per axle to a maximum of 13 600 kg for the two steering axles. The steering axle of the straight truck must be equipped with tires that are the proper size (as stamped in mm. on the side of the sidewall of the tire) x 10 kg per mm width of tire to the maximum weight of 6 800 kg for each steering axle of a straight truck operated on Primary Highways. The registered gross weight of the truck must be increased through SGI for primary highway operation to allow the additional weight on the steering axle, which in turn increases the gross weight of these straight trucks.

The maximum gross weight for a combination of vehicles consisting of a straight truck and trailer combination based on axle and tire requirements remains at 53 500 kg on primary highways.
