The Ministry operates four seasonal/ice roads including the Cumberland House Road (53 km), the Riverhurst Road (2 km), the Wollaston Lake Road (46 km) and the Athabasca Road (358 km).

Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure maintenance employees and traffic officers will provide assistance to motorists whenever service is warranted for public protection and safety. No payment is to be accepted for these services except for the sale of oil and gas.

Occasionally during the course of their work, maintenance crews or traffic officers provide assistance to motorists who encounter a vehicle accident, inclement weather or mechanical failure of their vehicle.

Ministry employees will assist in the following manner:

  • radio for police assistance at the scene of an accident
  • radio for ambulance service
  • flag and control traffic at the scene of an accident
  • radio for tow truck service if motorist's unit is down due to mechanical failure or is stuck
  • arrange for transportation of vehicle occupants in cold weather
  • tow vehicle out of ditch in remote areas where tow units are not available
  • perform minor repairs to help motorists in the remote areas of the province
    sale of gas and oil in the remote areas of the province where commercial source is not available
  • provide assistance to official RCMP requests
  • provide first aid if employee is qualified
  • transport injured or ill motorists to the nearest medical facility
